two ghosts stand outside avicebron's door and kvetch about him not taking care of himself

[Atsushi visits Avicebron semi-regularly, sometimes unannounced. Avicebron has a habit of avoiding him sometimes, and while normally Atsushi would do his best to respect that, Avicebron runs too low on Chroma for Atsushi to feel comfortable allowing him his distance. So, unnanounced visits.

He hadn't really considered that this might end up with him running into someone else at Avicebron's door.]

Ah, hello. Do you have plans with - Caster? [He definitely was about to say Avicebron's actual name before remembering not to.] I was just checking up on him, but I can come back another time...

[Sanson visits Avicebron less often than semi-regularly, considering his busy schedule, so it's sheer coincidence that he runs into someone with the exact same objective. He blinks, slightly surprised, and stares at the newcomer.]

Oh, no. [He shakes his head.] I thought of doing the same thing, actually, since we don't see each other all the time...

[Not to mention, it was always a comfort to know that other Servants who knew of Chaldea were stranded in this world with him. Misery loves company.]

He was well the last time I saw him, but it won't hurt to check. He's...

[Sanson probably already knows, given that he's friends with Avicebron and is here to check on him. Atsushi doesn't have to describe Avicebron's shut-in tendencies and lack of self-care.]

-well, it's good to know I'm not the only person who checks in on him.

[Yeah, even Sanson isn't as much of a shut-in as Avicebron is. It helps that he has Marie to pull him out of his shell, and being a doctor brings him to a lot of people.]

I also come from the same world as he does.

[Even if Avicebron may be from the future, since Sanson doesn't remember running into him in Chaldea back home.]

[A reasonable guess, even if that world must be populated by more than just dead people.]

I'm the spirit of an author myself, but not the same type he is.

Yes, I am. [He nods.] My class is Assassin. [a.k.a. the type Avicebron could beat into a pulp without breaking a sweat.]

I presume that you don't need a Master the way we normally do?

I don't. Actually, I don't know what that means...?

[Avicebron hasn't really discussed it with him.

Oh! [He thought by now Avicebron would have filled Atsushi in. Great, now Sanson has to make the stupid Fate/ explanations. THANKS A LOT, AVI.]

Where we come from, Heroic Spirits become Servants, who are bound by contract to fight for a Master. But in this world, we can live without one.

Oh, that's - not at all what I would've assumed that title meant...

Caster doesn't like to talk about his own circumstances much. Mostly I've gathered that you were famous in life and that in a normal summoning you would be enemies, and that's about all I know.

That's the gist of it, yes.

[He nods slowly.]

Perhaps in time, he'll be a bit more open, but for now all we can do is respect his privacy.

[Because "Assassin" is very much like that too. It's why he and Avicebron get along.]

It hasn't really been a problem until a minutes ago. And even then 'problem' is overstating things.

[It was all cleared up immediately, no one was accused of being a sub, it's all good.]

Mostly I'm just concerned that he isn't taking care of himself...

[He was about to mention that Servants don't eat, drink or sleep, when he remembers moonlacing.]

Did you send him a message before coming over?

...well, he's been avoiding me a little lately, so...

[He sighs, not wanting to pry any further.]

Er, you don't have to call me Assassin. You can call me Charles.

Oh! Pleased to meet you, Charles. I know some Heroic Spirits can be particular about who knows their real names.

[Hence why he didn't name Solomon.]

I like to think I'm reasonably well-versed in history, so it's possible I'd recognize your name, but Western history isn't as much my forte.

[Charles himself is particular, but he understands that some people would really rather not constantly call him "Assassin". Besides, he's still obscure enough within history that only someone well-read in French history in particular might be able to make the connection.]

That's because a Heroic Spirit sharing their real name would essentially be sharing their strength or weakness along with it. But others are more confident, or simply don't care while they're in an entirely different world.

Do you expect to get into many fights with the people you meet here? I know at home it's different, but...

Not really, but... [He pauses, rubbing his upper arm and shifting from foot to foot. Though this world was clearly not the site of a Holy Grail War, he still had his hangups about his true name.]

I don't like talking about myself.

[That's a mild way of putting it.]

...That's a feeling I can understand.

[He was lucky that he wasn't particularly famous in his lifetime, and when he's at the library, he fades into the background next to people like Dazai and Akutagawa... But here, plenty of people make enough of a fuss about Atsushi that he misses those days of relative anonymity.

And he doesn't even have anything particularly scandalous on his Wikipedia page.]

[It's a weird segue, but bear with him.]

Hmm? [Despite being relatively obscure, Charles nevertheless keeps his guard up. You never know when a French person with extensive enough knowledge of history would show up and reveal his true name to everyone else.

But he is learning, little by little, that it doesn't matter as much as he thinks it does.

The segue catches him a bit off-guard, but it's something he can answer without hesitating.]

Oh, nothing beyond keeping a diary. I'm trying to get back into that habit while I'm here, though.

A diary is just as valuable as any other kind of writing.

Caster is bad at taking compliments, but he'll accept them if it's about his poetry. So now you know his weakness.

[Use this power for good, Assassin.]

That's...

[He never did peg Avicebron as a poet, probably because the Caster was nothing like Shakespeare or Andersen. A soft laugh escapes him before he can stifle it, and there is a twinkle of amusement in his eyes.]

That's interesting. I'll keep that in mind.

[Even though he'd really rather not think of himself as taking advantage of someone's weakness.]

[He loves Avicebron, but sometimes that means being a tiny bit mean to him.]

[He nods very slowly, a small knowing grin etched on his face. Anyway, Atsushi can count on his new acquaintance being a good keeper of secrets.]

We'll see if I get an opportunity to read his poetry.

I highly recommend it if you get the chance. Both his secular and liturgical poems are stunning.

[He has a collection of those poems, but Charles can't have it, it's his to reread over and over again.]
