CHARACTERS IN-GAME: N/A

CHARACTER
NAME: Charles-Henri Sanson
CANON: Fate/Grand Order
CANON POINT: Post-Shinjuku singularity
AGE: Appears in his early to mid-twenties; actually over 200 years old
BACKGROUND: here +

PERSONALITY:

"Executioners are the blades of the state at all times. It wouldn't work any other way."

In 18th century France, one of the most feared men in society was the executioner, who carried out sentences imposed upon the criminals of those days. The executioner was a man who would not shirk his duty despite the stigma attached to it and would not hesitate to let the blade fall upon those marked by justice.

Sanson, having served as an executioner for years and having seen more than his fair share of death, blood and severed heads, is hardly flurried by the prospect of death or killing and can speak so casually about the subject. This lends an air of morbidity to his speech, which may creep more sensitive people out. During the Orleans singularity, when he was under the control of Jeanne d'Arc Alter and therefore in league with the bad guys and was pretty much evil and twisted, he not only extolled the virtues of the executioner - appreciative of human life, attentive to the technique used, dedicated to the business - but went so far as to consider it an ecstasy to have beheaded Marie Antoinette, calling it his "kiss" for her.

But if there is something that must be done for the pursuit of justice or a greater good, no matter how repulsive, you can trust that Sanson will carry it out unflinchingly, with dedication and determination. He believes deeply in justice, in wrongs that must be righted and vindicated, and even if the law fails to punish a criminal, as long as one does not give up, the criminal will one day pay for his sin. Sanson is a man of the law who sticks to it, demonstrated in his hesitation and doubts with Chevalier d'Eon and Marie taking three tons of dumplings with them. What he detests above all things is a false accusation. Sanson knows that not only has he been given a duty not many people would be able to carry, but it is given to him for the sake of justice. Death is seen then, as a way to exact justice.

This passion, dedication and care for human life is also exhibited in his profession as a doctor. During the dumpling festival, he tried to warn Marie against consuming too many dumplings, only to express interest in finding out if they really just go to her breasts or not. Actually this also shows how much of a nerd he can be. When he was giving Ritsuka Fujimaru a return gift for Valentine's Day, he made a chocolate drink and added egg yolks for that nutritional value.

"No, my agony haunts me even now, after death."

However, because of his line of work and the lives that he has taken, Sanson also views himself as a sinner who must atone for the blood on his hands. Although he claims to have no regrets (he notes in his interlude, "I mean, an executioner wielding a sword with regret would be something below a packhorse."), he is in agony over what he has done and the lives which he has taken. His view of himself as unworthy of sympathy and care, and in need of atonement, overflows into self-loathing, and he believes himself repulsive. This goes as far as him saying it's karma he deserves whenever he is defeated in battle, and asking his Master for forgiveness even when he is supposed to be celebrating a battle victory. During his interlude, when confronted about the people he killed and the possibility of him killing even more, Sanson is troubled to the point of distress until Ritsuka intervenes to vouch for his trustworthiness.

As a result, Sanson comes off as a gloomy character - stoic, yes, but at the same time, bothered and haunted by his past, all the things he has done, and his identity. He's quite aware that he was summoned as an Assassin for his proficiency in killing - and in fact, his body count probably exceeds those of most actual assassins. How he feels about this is rather complicated, because he isn't a killer per se.

This is revealed even while he was in league with Jeanne Alter and was defeated by Marie in their battle. Sanson confessed that he sought to become stronger and to give her a more fitting death in the hopes that she would forgive him.

"Peace, happiness, and love. Could anyone hate such things?"

But like many people, Sanson appreciates the finer, quieter things in life and shows care and concern for the people who have become close to him. When asked about his likes, he answers that he likes peace, happiness, and love. Despite feeling neutral toward his Master, he nonetheless pledges his loyalty to them and promises to protect their head (seriously) until the very end after his Master expresses belief in him even knowing his past. During the dumpling festival, he was quick to come to the defense of Marie Antoinette when Mash and the main character arrive on the scene.

As a doctor, he reached out to the poor to offer them the latest in medical treatments and technology, and this sympathy carried over to his being an executioner, advocating painless ways to execute criminals. Sanson sought to make their journey to the other side painless and effortless, even though in the end, it didn't quite work out and he has agonized over his work since. In his interlude, he also stood up for criminals who were being marched to the guillotine by declaring that an execution cannot take place without a trial.

Despite his tendency to be gloomy and somber, he does have a sense of humor, sometimes. His humor, though with a tendency to be dark, can be deadpan and snarky. He is especially snarky toward Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for example, with whom he tends to be at odds with and whom he sees as a rival, in how he declares he'll never lose to Mozart, and in how he trades verbal barbs with Mozart even in the heat of battle. People who don't quite see things the way he does or who disagree greatly with him get to see this side of him.

Yet, he is not so quick to reveal all of himself to anyone he is speaking to. There are things Sanson will not, or cannot, open up about, like his wish upon the Holy Grail, which remains a secret. His somber demeanor and his self-depreciation leave not a lot of room for friendliness. Though he has a sense of humor, he tends to have some trouble smiling normally; his smiling sprite exhibits a slasher smile more than a regular one. This may connote a little awkwardness in lighter moments with others. Well, he tries.

"Nevertheless, I offer my strength to you for believing in me then. Because that's all I can do now - "

"He tries" might be a good way to summarize Sanson's personality. He strives for what he believes is right and just and good, even though sometimes he falls short of it, and sometimes it doesn't quite work out the way he wants it to. Boy, does he try.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Described here but I will reiterate and elaborate as well.

Servant physiology. Sanson is a Servant, a Heroic Spirit summoned from the Throne of Heroes with great power and abilities in order to battle as weapons of their Masters in a Holy Grail War, where seven Masters compete for the wish-granting Holy Grail. Although the setup of the plot in Fate/Grand Order is different from a normal Holy Grail War, the role and the nature of a Servant nonetheless remain the same. Servants are summoned in the Chaldea Security Organization through the FATE system as part of their effort to stabilize human civilization and to reclaim the Holy Grails causing distortions in the continuum.

For his great and significant deeds as the executioner during the French Revolution, which made enough of an impact upon history, Sanson has attained the status of a Heroic Spirit able to become a Servant.

Servants are characterized by strength, agility, endurance, and capacity for magic greater than normal humans, as well as the capacity to assume an invisible form, or what is called a Spiritual Body. A Servant can bleed and feel pain, but will be harder to kill as he is not mortal. He cannot be harmed by bullets from a gun, for example, but magecraft and Noble Phantasms (more on that later) as well as attacks from other Servants can cause considerable damage. Servants don't need to eat or sleep to survive, but nonetheless eat and/or sleep when they feel like it. They are sustained by mana from their Masters, but in this game the concept of mana will be replaced by emotion magic. Even though he is from 18th century France, Sanson is also granted a working knowledge of the modern era of Earth upon being summoned, so most technology and other scientific breakthroughs will not be foreign to him.

There are different classes of Servants. Servants are classed depending on what they were famous for and their strengths and skills in their lives that made them who they are. Sanson is classed as Assassin, one of the four cavalry classes and known for having low attack power and an aptitude for sneak attacks and proficient killing. An Assassin, hence the name, is built more to kill than to actually fight. Almost every Assassin possesses, to some degree, the latent ability called Presence Concealment, which is exactly what it says on the tin and is different from the concept of a Spiritual Body. It allows a Servant to hide their identity as one and to pass unnoticed as such, whereas a Spiritual Body does not completely mask the Servant's presence. However, being a low-class Assassin, Sanson's Presence Concealment stat comes up at a measly D (with E being the lowest). Though he can spy on people, another Servant can easily detect his presence. It is likely that this is due to him not being an actual assassin in his life, and his Lawful Evil alignment (he's more likely to play by the rules than be a real assassin). Still, despite him not quite being a powerful Assassin, he is nonetheless powerful if compared to a regular human.

Noble phantasm. Each Servant has at least one Noble Phantasm, an ultimate attack of sheer power often saved as a last resort as it tends to reveal their True Name (their identity) and is a symbol of who they are, or what they have accomplished in their life. It can be anti-army, decimating multiple enemies at once, or a single target. It can also be a specialized weapon or a special technique in combat. Whatever it is, it is the Servant's trump card, closely held to their chest.

Sanson's Noble Phantasm is La Mort Espoir, which takes the form of a large guillotine (of course). When unleashed, shadowy hands trap the intended target (target, singular) as the guillotine blade falls, dealing a significant amount of damage. In the game, the Noble Phantasm has a low chance of instantly killing the enemy, and according to the description in his profile, "the probability of death is not determined by resistance to curse or luck, but by whether or not the will is strong enough to overcome destiny". If the target survives, their defensive capability is decreased. His Noble Phantasm is ranked A on a scale from E being the lowest to A+, A++ and EX. Which means it's pretty dang good at what it does.

Servant skills. In Fate/Grand Order, they have a cooldown period depending on their level, which may connote that Sanson cannot use these too often. He has three particular skills, with their corresponding ranks (again, with E being the lowest and A+, A++ and EX being the highest):

1. Executioner A++: In the game, once activated, it raises his damage output against evil-aligned enemies. Considering what he was in his past life, a wielder of the blade of justice against criminals and enemies of the State (or, during the Revolution, enemies of the Revolution), this shouldn't be surprising.

2. Medicine A+: Considering that he was a doctor in his past life, Sanson possesses the power to heal himself or another person, and to remove status effects like curses or lingering magic.

3. Human Study B: When activated, his damage output against human and humanoid enemies is increased as a testament to his knowledge and skills as a doctor. In a way, he knows exactly where to hit you depending on how badly he wants you to hurt. :)

Other abilities: As a doctor, he possesses the latest knowledge of medicine as of his time, as his family often provided the best for the paupers who came to them for treatment, as well as techniques he may have learned during his time with the Chaldea Security Organization. He is also a good hand with a sword, his main weapon, and in the Orleans Singularity he showed a degree of mental strength as he was able to regain his sanity after being revived and sent to fight under madness enhancement, although it took some ribbing from Mozart to help Sanson snap out of it.

INVENTORY: Just this sword and the clothes on his back.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis.
