It means "happy birthday" in French. I can teach you other phrases and words, if you'd like. Cloud himself may know a few by now.

[Sanson wouldn't put it past Cloud to try and learn French to impress Marie.]

[ Weiss will follow him to the kitchen and just hang by the counter. ]

... Cloud?

[ Totally clueless, and she totally sounds like she's questioning this a little bit too much. ]

I don't mind learning, but why would he know?

[He peers into Weiss' cupboards and begins taking out the cups, the saucers, and the teapot, listening to her footsteps.]

Marie is teaching him. He told me so during the Firialia ball. [Because at that time, the breaking of a few nuts gave Cloud full knowledge of French for 24 hours.]

[ Huh! Cloud's never mentioned... but that's one more new thing she knows about him now. Besides, how long has it been since they started dating? Wouldn't it be creepy if Weiss crept into every single facet of his life? ]

But her competitiveness is cute. And refreshing, in a way. She's still young, and deserves to have a little fun every now and then. It makes him smile.]

It's a common word with a lot of different meanings. You'll learn them when I start teaching you.

I think I have lavender-orange.

[ True enough, there is a small canister there somewhere, along with a collection of other fruity teas. ]

And that sounds good. I'd like to learn more. Midorima doesn't teach me Japanese, but it's interesting learning about Japan when he talks about it.

No, not an airplane. [He shakes his head before glancing over at the tea.] We were Rayshifted to different areas and periods of Japan to correct the flow of history and time, using Chaldea's technology. You could say that we traveled through time.

[It sounds really strange when he talks about it with someone who isn't from Chaldea, because it IS strange now that he thinks about it.]

You just said a bunch of terms that I hardly understand.

[ Which is Weiss' way of saying "Charles? Explain". ]

[At first he looks at her, but then he just smiles, laughing softly.]

It's a good thing we're having tea, because it's not going to be a short explanation. [He picks up the tray of tea and ferries it to their table.]

Goetia, the self-styled King of Demon Gods, sought to bring an end to humanity by creating singularities within history to destroy its course. This is why we had to travel through time - to Rayshift.

[He's well aware that the explanation is going to raise even more questions, judging from the expression on his face.]

Rayshifting entails the projection of the spirit of a living human being into the past. A person is placed into a Spiritron Chassis, which is also called a coffin, for the greatest chance of a successful Rayshift.

[schmisse]

[ Weiss arches a brow at that. ]

I have somewhere to be in a little while.

[ Like, she really does. Midorima ordered food and she has to go to his apartment in less than an hour. ]

How do you rayshift if you're... you know.

[ A Servant?? Not alive??? ]

[painalty]

[He's still smiling with mild amusement.]

I'll just explain what I can for now. [Weiss is free to bug him for the rest of the explanation.] The coffins work for us too, since we at least have spirits. [Or rather, they ARE spirits. Maybe they're not alive ALIVE but they were technically kind of alive as Servants.]

[Sanson decides to just busy himself with pouring tea into the cups and passing Weiss one of the croissants.]

What does "creating singularities" mean, then?

[ The rayshifting issue's been addressed, at least. ]

You know how normally, Servants are summoned to fight for a Holy Grail, which has the power to grant wishes? This time, Holy Grails in various points in time to distort history and the foundation of humanity.

[What's a better way to explain this?]

A better way to say this is...hmm, give me an example of a significant historical event in Remnant.

[schmisse]

Hm... Then. . . when the Atlas Kingdom unveiled the Cross Continental System and gave the entire world a means to communicate with one another no matter where they were.

[ Something nice, for once. ]

[painalty]

If a Holy Grail were to be left in that point in time, the Cross Continental System would not have been finished, or would not have been built at all. Some important figures during that time may also be...er, corrupted, for lack of a better term, or manipulated in some way to alter the course of history.

And that, as you can imagine, would have a catastrophic effect on the present and future.

[schmisse]

I think I get it...

Then what happens if the Holy Grail isn't there anymore?

[painalty]

History is restored to its proper state, and anything and anyone that does not belong in that era is erased.

[Easier said than done.]

[schmisse]

Erased... Completely? Does that mean the people uninvolved won't remember?

[painalty]

Yes. [He nods.] It will be as if the Holy Grail never materialized in that part of history. But sometimes, traces of the Grail's power linger, and we have to return to clean up what is left.

Cleaning up, more often than not, involves fighting monsters that have no place in history.
